‘Be Afraid Of Nothing’

Guy Bass - Dinkin Dings and the Revenge of the Fish-Men

On Tuesday 21st June, Year 2 from Edith Neville Primary School went to meet Guy Bass, the 36-year old award-winning author of the Dinkin Dings series. Guy grew up dreaming of being a superhero – he even had a Spider-Man costume, but now he’s outgrown the costume he makes a living writing books and plays.

Guy introduced himself by saying, ‘I can’t talk to you about reading or writing. Today I’m here to save your lives, to teach you how to survive your worst fears’. The children were perplexed! Their worst fears were: dragons; dogs; vampires; zombies; bats; cats; spiders….. and flying Dutchmen! (We didn’t understand that one either!)

Guy read several extracts from his books about Dinkin Dings, the boy who is afraid of just about everything and everyone. In Dinkin Dings’ eyes pieces of furniture become terrifying monsters and even quite ordinary, innocent little children turn into gangs of flesh-eating zombies! Year 2 however are made of sterner stuff. They didn’t appear to be at all scared and produced some quite terrifying sound effects to go along with the story.

Finally three extremely brave children conquered their fears and dressed up as Dinkin Dings’ friends: Arthur the ghost outside his window, Hermit the monster under his bed and Edgar the skeleton in his cupboard. The children looked brilliant and totally unrecognisable. They screamed their loudest and tried their best to look scary, however the courageous Year 2 found it hilarious to see their classmates transformed into such creatures. As they all laughed out loud it seemed that that they had indeed survived their worst fears.
