Pop Up Festival for SEND

Pop Up Festival for SEND is a nationwide annual literature festival that brings high-quality books and diverse authors into special schools.

We collaborate with schools and education providers to develop an enriching programme delivered over the summer term:

  • for all ages (3-18 years) and needs, including sensory and PMLD
  • in special schools with SEMH with LD, PSCN and SLCN/ASD designations
  • immerses pupils in reading, writing and storytelling to improve literacy, communication and wellbeing
  • upskills, empowers and resources teachers to use accessible literature in SEND classes in fresh and creative ways.

Funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, and supported in 2020 by the National Lottery Community Fund and Kent Community Foundation, it is delivered in partnership with KsENT whose members form an Advisory Board.

In response to the ongoing impacts of Covid-19, most of the second year had to be put back from the summer to the autumn term in 2020 and delivered online. We thank all involved for their tremendous dedication and adaptability.

The approach of story writing through drawing a book cover helped make ideas quicker and clearer.
