An International Illustration Exchange

Our first ever international venture was a truly ambitious one!

11 arts and cultural organisations, 17 universities and colleges, 4 publishers, 18 author-illustrators and 150 young artists across 4 countries collaborated to produce a new collection of graphic stories, which were launched at London Book Fair in 2018 as part of the Baltic Countries Market Focus.

Through this international exchange of illustration practice and stories, we delivered an artist-led mentoring programme designed to shine a spotlight on undiscovered talent, and signpost routes into children’s publishing for aspiring illustrators. Our young artists took on an especially tough challenge: to transform both sides of an unusually long blank piece of paper (a ‘leporello’, or concertina frieze) into a graphic story in any style, using (or not using) any language, and with no unifying theme or aesthetic.

A curated collection of some of the very best leporellos are displayed here – along with the catalogue for an exhibition of artwork at the Royal Over-Seas League in London, and two films about the project.
