We Are Hackney

On World Book Day 2013, 100 Hackney primary school children visited City Hall to launch a film they made to kick-off a London-Rio Storytelling Relay – just one of many legacy projects from London’s 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games.

This project gave children living in Hackney the chance to share and celebrate their Olympic experiences with children in Rio, as the Olympic torch passed from one city to the other. The launch of their film We Are Hackney – made with children’s authors Candy Gourlay and Ed Vere – at City Hall was also a highlight of our five-day Pop Up Festival programme, funded by Linklaters global law firm. The event was delivered with The Mayor’s Fund Inspiring Reading project, which supported Londoners across 147 schools in some of the capital’s most disadvantaged areas to improve their reading skills.
