Pop Up Festival at Bradfields Special School

Bradfields Academy is a special school in Chatham (Kent) with around 290 pupils aged 4-19 years. Their whole school took part in Pop Up Festival for SEND between 2016 and 2018, hosting over 80 immersive creative workshops with children’s authors – many of whom built lasting connections with the school community.

Although the school had achieved no GCSEs in English Language & Literature in 2016 or before, while taking part in Pop Up Festival, Bradfields’ pupils achieved 31 GCSE passes (several with distinction) in 2017, increasing to 46 in 2018 and continuing to rise in the years since. Staff across the school reported that Pop Up Festival played a significant role in Bradfields’ academic success.

Impact Spotlight

“There has been a marked impact across the board in English, with reading and writing levels showing an outstanding rise. Although we have implemented many ideas to achieve this, there can be no doubt that Pop Up Festival played a fundamental part.”
