Pop Up Festival in Peterborough schools

Seven schools – six primaries and one special school – took part in Pop Up Festival in Peterborough over 3 years (2016-2018). Peterborough is an area with levels of attainment that were described by Ofsted in 2013-14 as ‘particularly poor’. At the project’s inception 21% of pupils were entitled to Free School Meals – significantly higher than average. Over three years we delivered 255 author workshops for the pupils, provided 4,400 new books to the schools’ libraries, plus a host of CPD sessions for the teachers – including a residential with poet and senior university lecturer Andrew McMillan.

“[The project] has helped us as a class to have a shared approach to the learning whilst giving freedom to those who need it. Having an author talk to the children has made the children feel that they can be more successful and they have an improved understanding that it is okay to make a mistake.”
