Offers for Schools and Teachers

Through our education activities we create rich learning opportunities for pupils and educators in schools across the UK. We especially strive to improve the literacy standards of schools in deprived places and challenging circumstances, harnessing the imagination and expertise of the best contemporary children’s authors. Our inclusive and outcomes-oriented literature programmes are designed to appeal to any age or level of ability, and can take place anywhere – from rural villages to inner cities. We work across whole schools, key stages, and year groups as well as with individual classes. Each project revolves around quality contemporary children’s books and each experience is tailored responsively according to the needs of the class. Our education projects are proven to improve the literary practice of educators and enhance the creative capacity, confidence and imaginative self-expression of pupils.

We filmed two of our storyteller sessions, Marion Leeper and Kimba Bush, at Waddesdon Manor festival as part of our summer Pop Up Festival. Watch here! Funded by the Rothschild Foundation.

Opportunities for writers and illustrators

Through our talent development programmes and projects we invest in aspiring and emerging children’s writers and illustrators. We especially want to nourish talented artists from backgrounds that are under-represented in children’s publishing – including writers and illustrators of colour, who are LGBT+, are disabled, and from other minorities and communities. We also support and advocate for children’s authors at every stage of their publishing careers – including through training, paid commissions, purchasing books, platforms for promoting their literature and sharing their expertise, as well as evaluating the impact of their work on children’s lives. Our talent programmes and projects represent significant investment in the children’s literature economy, which in turn provides vital support to the children’s publishing industry.

Projects for community groups

Through our community projects we facilitate access to participatory literature activities for children and young people outside of school settings. Community projects provide empowering opportunities for children and young people to work with writers and illustrators to make and share stories. We especially seek to engage groups who are experiencing marginalisation, isolation or who are at risk. We always co-design projects responsively through consultation with community partners and participants to reflect the needs, values and interests of those taking part. Projects revolve around collaboration or co-creation, through author-led processes, to produce quality stories in diverse forms and other languages that can be shared with the wider world. Our community projects improve the wellbeing, aspirations and life chances of children and young people.
