Pop Up worked with live literature organisation Speaking Volumes and children’s reading charity BookTrust to promote, celebrate and evaluate Speaking Volumes’ ground-breaking Breaking New Ground initiative. Breaking New Ground is a vital new resource profiling 100+ British children’s writers, illustrators, poets and storytellers of colour working in the UK today. It’s an invaluable guide for anyone who’s interested in exploring the true diversity of voices in children’s literature.
Breaking New Ground represents a significant intervention in challenging the current state of diversity in children’s publishing, as revealed by several major reports including CLPE’s ‘Reflecting Realities’ (2018) and BookTrust Represents (2019). It launched at The London Book Fair 2019, followed by a series of Pop Up-produced events in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to raise awareness across the country.
Over 15 months, Pop Up are following the careers of some of the artists featured in the catalogue, tracking their experiences in literature and publishing to capture the opportunities, achievements and challenges they face. We’ll be sharing stories from this evaluation – alongside insights into pioneering initiatives, innovative practice and creative discoveries in children’s literature and publishing – at a one-day Pop Up Lab conference for authors, publishers and literature professionals in February 2021 at London’s Discover Children’s Story Centre (email firstname.lastname@example.org to find out more).
