Success Stories

Sahar Haghgoo

The Pathways experience created a space to learn from art directors at children’s publishers, as well as a number of university lecturers and illustrators. It was a great opportunity to develop as an illustrator and find ways to improve. I have learned a lot about the children’s publishing industry from Pathways.
Sahar Haghgoo is an Iranian-English illustrator living in London, inspired by nature, people around her and things in everyday life. She creates her illustrations through digital and mixed media techniques, and has a love for theatre, making connections between theatrical scenes and her illustrations.

Sahar self-published several titles before joining Pathways. Her first UK book, Here Be Monsters by Jay Hulme, was published in 2021 as part of Pop Up’s ‘10 Stories to Make a Difference’ collection and was nominated for the Kate Greenaway Medal 2022. Sahar has recently signed a multi-book deal with Nosy Crow, the first two titles being Princess Minna: The Unicorn Mix-Up (2022) and Princess Minna: The Enchanted Forest (2022), both by Kirsty Applebaum
Ruthine Burton is an illustrator living in London. Ruthine loves to work on real paper with pastels, pencils or paint but does work digitally too. She has always loved drawing people and once upon a time was a pavement portrait artist. She also enjoys designing characters and environments. This interest comes from her background of working as an artist and animator in the games industry.

Ruthine has worked on three book commissions with HarperCollins Children’s Books since finishing the course, as well as a colouring book commission with a renowned publisher

Chanté Timothy

My Pathways journey has been career- Chanté Timothy changing; the ability to work on live briefs and understand what it’s like to work with different types of publishers, understanding the different subsections, and the behind-the-scenes of the business side to publishing has really opened my eyes to the possibilities of the children’s book industry and publishing as a whole.
Chanté Timothy is an illustrator who loves experimenting with movement, vibrant colour, character design and storytelling. Drawing for as long as she can remember, Chanté has always been that strange kid who would ask for paper and pen to entertain herself instead of playing with toys.

Chanté’s work has been published in five titles: Hey You! by Dapo Adeola (2021); Daddy Do My Hair: Beth’s Twists by Tola Okogwu (2022); My Big Mouth by Steven Camden (2021); Happy Here (2021), introduced by Sharna Jackson, alongside ten Black British authors and ten Illustrators; A Black Woman Did That by Malaika Adero (2020).

Making Sequential Narratives

Learn how to structure and execute compelling visual narratives in both picture book and comic forms – using frames, page turns and spreads to create engaging and rewarding children’s stories. You’ll gain understanding of some of the fundamentals of sequential storytelling, including the value of thumbnails and storyboards in pacing your story and spotting unintentional patterns, the use and value of compositional space, and why readers need to track consistent elements across a story. By the end of the course you’ll have produced repeatable character designs, a page of comic book sequential art (with before and after plans), and a storyboard mapping out each ‘page’ of an entire sequence.

Working With Colour

How to use colour in children’s books is one of the most important aspects of illustration. In this Masterclass you’ll explore the psychology of colour and how it can be used effectively to cultivate atmosphere and stimulate emotion, and as a tool to illuminate detail that’s integral to the story. The session will cover a range of practical techniques, from making colour mood boards, to working with limited palettes, to colouring for screen and print. By the end of this Masterclass, you will have produced a colour mood board to apply to the specific story you want to tell.

Illustrating Place & Atmosphere

Explore how atmosphere is created and presented in picture books, and how a sense of place can be used to evoke feelings in the reader. You’ll learn how to cultivate atmosphere in your artwork, making use of lighting, texture, objects and characters to enhance the mood and suggest an inhabitable reality.
