Illustrating show-stopping covers for your own books and others is a useful skill to have – and another way of earning as an illustrator.
In this masterclass, you will gain insight into the process of working to a commercial cover brief. You will also gain an understanding of what to expect in terms of art direction and feedback from publishers, and how to respond to this. Learning how to create multiple compositions from one idea, how to edit your composition post-feedback, how to use colour and texture to bring your final idea to the shelf, you will be able to balance market needs and artistic preferences.
By the end of this masterclass, you will come away with 3 rough cover concepts in response to a brief, with the opportunity to take one to the final stage. A role play of a Covers Meeting will give you insight into the balance between market-driven and artistic-driven decision making, and present you with the challenge of adapting your design in response.
