Creating impactful visual sequences with your characters requires understanding how to use timing and structure in sequential images. Having worked together for nearly 20 years, children’s book illustrator Viviane Schwarz and Ben Norland, Executive Art Director at Walker Books, now share their unique insights into making a bestselling picture book. Over two days, they will share their many tips and tricks, teaching you how to ‘play’ with your characters to achieve the best professional results, and show you what makes a character work for a successful picture book.

By the end of this two-day course, you will have:
- Developed and extended one or more picture book characters and put these designs in the context of sequences of images
- Exercised the creation of appropriate levels of roughs for each stage of picture book making
- Discovered tools to enliven your existing works, and what to aim for in extending these into future full-scale picture book projects
You’ll discover methods for expanding your characters, and learn how to apply tools and techniques to develop story roughs with confidence. By the end of the course you’ll know what to aim for in taking your ideas and roughs to the next level i.e. a full-scale picture book project. Ideally, you’ll bring a developed character design and story idea to the course – but you’re also welcome to join without!
