New poetry by exceptional and emerging young poets and illustrators

Pop Up and Otter-Barry Books collaborated to present Rising Stars: a poetry anthology launching the work of five young debut poets and three graduate illustrators – all under 26. Each poet presents eight new poems for 10-14 year olds, and created online and video resources to inspire young readers to write poetry themselves.

In 2018, Rising Stars received a special commendation at the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education’s poetry prize CLiPPA.

In 2019, the anthology was featured in EmpathyLab’s Read for Empathy Guide of 15 books to build empathy.

Laura Dockrill, performance poet, author and illustrator says:

“Rising Stars is a magical and capturing anthology, full with inventive curiosities and ideas that challenge, inspire and move its readers. It’s a compass towards new and talented writers and proves that poetry is going in a very exciting and brave direction.”

CLiPPA award-winning poet Kate Wakeling says:

“A vibrant anthology of fresh new voices. Here are five poets unafraid to tackle the big themes, each writing with wit, poise, power and heart.”

Caroline Bird, prize-winning performance poet and playwright says:

“You can’t experience something for the first time twice – this is the wisdom of the young, and too often it goes unheard. This anthology from young people to young people is a launchpad for a life of poetry”
